My name is Reginald Morusma and I am originally from Haiti and now divide my time between Haiti and the Dominican Republic performing ministry services. I have been involved with Mission of Hope since 2019. I started as a translator knowing that my passion was always to become a missionary. In 2022 I did an internship with MOH and I worked with the St. Joe’s Adult Mission team. I quickly became very attached to this team. It was a memorable week and we became very close. As an intern, I was very impressed with the St. Joe’s team’s commitment to mission work and service. The way they interacted with the local people was very inspirational. After 2022, I thought it was goodbye forever. In 2023, I returned for a week of service with MOH and much to my surprise I heard a familiar laugh (Dave) across the way. I worked with a different team in 2023 but really enjoyed my time with the St Joe’s crew during free time. Now here we are again serving together and I am learning a lot about the Catholic church this week. I enjoy joining the group for the morning rosary and even have my own rosary beads. On Sunday I attended the service with “Father David ??”. Seriously, I thought he did a great job and if I didn’t know, I would have thought he was actually a preacher. One reason I really love working with this team is they have a real heart for service. For example, we joined together to build a wall, but they go out of their way to take the job so much further than originally designed. They see beyond what is asked for because their hearts help them find the next level of service. This especially helps me to look beyond the expected to find a higher level of service. I have not encountered other teams that take a personal interest in people to bring a bigger display of the love of God to the experience. They do not see obstacles, like hundreds of cockroaches, standing in their way. They are constantly moving forward to accomplish something more. They make a personal connection with the homeowners and Haitian contractors they are working with and make everyone welcome.
My plan for the future is to dedicate my life to God, to ministry and to people. I would sacrifice everything to bring the love of God to people. In doing this I started a ministry where I use every gift I have from God to minister to people such as woodworking, interior design, kids ministry, clean water ministry, and medical mission in Haiti. Watching the St Joe’s team do more than is asked for, I realize that there may be more that is asked of me. I plan to begin by doing more personal services for people, like doing laundry, cleaning homes, picking up garbage. These things look small, but their impact can be big. I feel that the personal connection is key to bringing God’s love to others. I’ve been praying to God that I am in need of a new bible and today the team said they had a gift for me. As they handed me the wrapped gift, I immediately realized it was a new bible. When I unwrapped it, I saw that it was a leather bible just like the one I had prayed for. And even better, it is an English/Spanish bilingual bible. I am trying to improve my Spanish to be able to minister to Spanish-speaking Dominicans. I am so grateful to God for giving me the unexpected blessing of another year working with the St. Joe’s team.
Bless you all, Reggie Morusma
